FEAR: The Driving Force Behind American Politics

The Young Turks carried a feature today wherein they played a clip from Michael Moore after creating Bowling for Columbine.  Moore asserted that fear of African-Americans plays a key role in American’s belief that guns are needed.  As the hosts discussed this issue, they highlighted the fact that indeed, the Conservative factions of the Republican Party are indeed using fear to drive so many of their platforms—which is a kind way of saying that this Party uses fear daily to promote their own power.

This is indeed the case.

Consider some of these quotes from various “News” pundits and listen to the underlying fear that is used to cause us to unnecessarily fear each other.

Ann Coulter

“Not all Muslims may be terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims — at least all terrorists capable of assembling a murderous plot against America that leaves 7,000 people dead in under two hours. ”How are we to distinguish the peaceful Muslims from the fanatical, homicidal Muslims about to murder thousands of our fellow citizens?”

Message:  Fear ALL Muslims.  I suppose she forgot that Timothy McVeigh was not a Muslim.  No, the entire purpose of this statement was to whip up fear of Muslims.

Sean Hannity

“If we get nationalized health care, it’s over; this is socialism”

Message:  Fear those who are trying to help anyone without access to affordable health insurance coverage.

Glenn Beck

“They [Democrats in Congress] believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You’re going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you.” June 9, 2010

Message: Fear ALL Democrats…’nuff said there.

Rush Limbaugh

“It’s abundantly clear now that Obama has given up winning Arizona. He doesn’t care. He’s written it off…Now he’s going ‘Soviet’ on it to make an example to every other state, by the way. And do not discount that. This is a message to every other state on the border: ‘The same can happen to you if you try this stunt…It’s good old fashioned, political, Soviet-style intimidation.”

Message:  Fear our President—which translates to “Fear the Government”—the very reason why McVeigh attacked the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City.

The NRA

Of course, these insidious people do not stop there, they also want us to Fear the Mentally Ill.  Where do they draw the line at both common sense and human decency?  It would seem that there is no such line when it comes to keeping power and making money in the process.  The NRA now suggests…that we effectively now invade the privacy and already difficult position those with Mental Illness live with daily by making them targets.

Watch the video of the NRA spokesman describing how we now need to fear the mentally ill, not guns here.

Message from Wayne La Pierre and the NRA: Fear the Mentally Ill

So now we are going to attack the most vulnerable in our society…nice.

The point is clear.  The GOP uses fear today much as it has been using fear for the last 40 years to retain power.  Of course, much of what we see today from the Republican Party stems from Nixon’s realignment of the Party of Lincoln to the Party-of-coddle-the-Southern-Conservatives-to-gain-and-retain-power.

Where do we go from here?

Not coincidentally, Southern Conservatives have been masters at using fear for centuries.  First, they enslaved Black people, keeping them in check by the use of fear aka whippings and killing their slaves when necessary to retain their control over them.  After the Civil War ended slavery, they came up with the KKK to continue the climate of fear to keep Black people enslaved to their racist policies.  After Nixon, Jim Crow fear against African-Americans was kept alive through use of the Drug War.  The gross disparities in the Criminal Justice system aptly demonstrate how successful they have been, especially in the racist southern states like Louisiana, which is now the prison capital of the world.

Today, with support for the Drug War waning, these same people are seeking more cunning ways to continue racial fear by extending that to include literally EVERYONE.  The targets may have shifted, but the goal is the same—to retain power and control at the expense of the American Dream.

Cowards in charge book cover

A scathing denunciation of the Republican Party and its role in the US Drug War. This book outlines President Nixon’s agenda to gain power by aligning the Republican Party with Southern Democrats after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In addition, the book charges that the GOP has remained complicit in maintaining the Drug War at the expense of African-Americans for the purpose of retaining power through the appeasement of Southern Conservatives.
